Notes:
Not an exact or even intended representation of the show or the people in it, this was loosely inspired by a guilty pleasure of mine; the TV show Ghost Adventures. I am a total skeptic when it comes to ghosts but I find the show interesting and often amusing. (No disrespect meant to the guys on the show, I admire their courage for going into those creepy as hell places at night plus their obvious and genuine dedication to their mission. I’m just having a little fun here.) I try never to miss an episode or a marathon of the show because it’s just that damn fascinating to me. I don’t watch any other “paranormal” shows, just Ghost Adventures.
If you’ve watched the show (or any of the other paranormal shows) then you probably recognize some of the elements of this piece. In the lower right corner are “balls of light” or “ghostly orbs” which often make appearances on the shows around the time they go to record EVPs. That’s what the device is the man in the foreground is holding; a digital EVP recorder. I tried to make the scene look like it was recorded in night-vision but that didn’t look good to me so I instead created an “artistic interpretation of night-vision”. I actually started on this artwork back in 2013. I just now, finally, finished it.
Technical Notes:
I thought about using IDL on the ghost in the background but changed my mind since I never really heard of a ghost projecting light on walls or anything. Yeah, go me for trying to be “realistic” with this one. I instead rendered it using a combination of translucency and partial transparency with a touch of ambiance to make it glow.
The night-vision effect (or artistic interpretation of night-vision effect) was created in postwork using several adjustment layers, overlays, and various Photoshop actions before I finally came up with something that looked good to me. Unlike true night-vision, the scene is not monochromatic green; there’s still some of the scene’s original color left. The light beams coming through the windows were rendered in Poser with volumetric lighting. They weren’t that thick in the original render but my night-vision effect increased the glowy contrast of the light beams, making them appear thicker.
I added the ghostly light orbs using Rons Bokeh brushes in postwork. The camera’s night-vision light was also added in postwork. Other than that, there wasn’t much postwork to be done once I finished the night-vision effects.
