I first created an artwork with this title and general scene back in 2011 or 2012, I think. I decided to revisit the idea (and create a redux) after finalizing the new Shelby Bly character concept for the new novel. This started out as an experiment in lighting (see the Tech Notes for more on that) and it became an artwork in and of itself.

Technical Notes:
To create the lighting, I combined both traditional lighting (a soft, contrasted point light above the torch where the flames are and an infinite light set to enhance specularity) and IDL (a cylinder primitive positioned on the top of the torch with a high ambient value). I then added special effects (the flames, smoke, etc.) and did a little extra postwork to enhance the scene overall in Photoshop.
