This started out as a test scene to see if I could create a convincing underwater effect for my graphic novel illustrations which I will be starting on very soon. (The graphic novel I speak of is the Shelby Bly Project.) I then added more to the scene including an early concept of the “Sunken Temple Ruins” from the novel and a deadly “Siren” which can be found somewhere in the scene (hint: look next to that pillar on the left)plus, of course, Shelby Bly in her scuba gear. I think my underwater technique still needs a bit more work but at least I’m on the right track now. I’ll keep working on it but for now, I rather like the way this artwork turned out. I am always open to constructive critique if you have any to offer though! Just leave a comment and let me know how you think I could improve this scene. Thank you.
I used atmosphere, depth cue (not to be confused with depth of field which I also used), and a light setup consisting of a few infinite lights and a caustics gel spot light to render this scene. In postwork I added a few gradient overlays, an additional caustics layer or two, and some adjustment layers to finish the scene. I also added the bubbles coming from Shelby’s mask in postwork using the “Ron’s Underwater Air” brushes.
