Notes:
I originally created an art artwork similar to this in 2011. It was inspired by a documentary about the 1920s that I was watching while creating the character featured (Yvonne). I recently decided to update this piece for 2013. I mainly just swapped a few models, edited some materials, adjusted the lights, and enhanced some of the details plus did a much better job of postwork. Thankfully, I didn’t have need to edit the posing of the feather boa which I recall being the most difficult part when I first created this two years ago. I’ve got to say, this new version looks far more “real” to me. I like it.
Technical Notes:
The base render was fairly straight forward. Once I got the character posed and the materials the way I wanted, I created an IDL setup with a dark green dome and various tones of gold for each of the three other lights. It took several hours to render, mainly due to that damn boa. The real magic came during postwork where I enhanced the colors, contrast, etc. using adjustment layers, texture overlays, and a free Photoshop action to give it a vintage look. The cigarette smoke was added with a brush that I then edited/adjusted to blend into the scene.
