This is actually my third (and perhaps final because I’ve run out of patience) attempt at this concept after my first two attempts failed miserably. It’s inspired by a scene from Jurassic World though with great artistic liberties taken. What do you think of this final artwork attempt? I think it’s far better than the first two attempts at least and I’m actually happy with it. I love dinosaurs (always have) so this one was fun to do in spite of my earlier mistakes. I also loved the Jurassic World movie (the first one) and I’m looking forward to seeing Dominion when it comes out. Maybe it will inspire me as well.
I rendered this scene completely in Poser 11 Superfly with my own new Superfly enhanced materials on the old T-Rex model. I decided against depth of field because I had such bothersome issues with it during my first two attempts at the concept for this artwork. The lighting of this scene was a little tricky. I used a point light on the lower edge of the dark sky dome as my “sun” which projected light from behind the scene at a low angle. The sky dome also projected some low ambient light. The main light source came from the flare which was an emissive material on a prop placed right on top of the flare prop along with an extra point light for a little added light and darker shadows. In postwork, I used a 2D resource to add the flame and sparks to the flare and then a brush to add the smoke in a few different shades of gray to give it volume. I then used several adjustment layers to get the colors and contrast looking the way I wanted them to. Finally, I added a soft vignette effect and finished the artwork.
