I originally created a realism portrait named Starlet back in 2016 that featured this very character putting lipstick on. This new artwork is basically a vastly improved redux of that previous artwork with more detail, depth, better posing, and just overall better in my opinion. If the “starlet” looks familiar, well, that’s because I modeled her face after a rather famous actress and why I named this artwork “starlet”.
This scene was rendered in Superfly using an advanced Cycles shader setup on the mirror for the reflection. I actually rendered the mirror twice with a slightly different mirror shader setup each time. One shader had a slightly blurry reflection and the other was sharp. I then combined the two reflections in Photoshop and used the eraser brush to erase all of the sharp reflection except for her face so that the background’s reflection was blurry. I did this to fake a depth of field effect on the mirror. I used Poser’s morph brush to depress her lip a bit where the lipstick prop meets her lip to add to the realism. The light setup was rather simple, a sunlight coming from the window via a point light and an area light to be the light reflecting from mirror onto everything in the room because sometimes you have to fake/enhance those little things a bit. In postwork I used a few Photoshop actions to give it a creamy contrast and enhance the overall “morning” look and feel.
