The idea for this artwork came to me when I saw a photo of Marilyn Monroe and decided to try to create a similar artwork but with a modern actress. I chose to model the my starlet after Scarlett Johansson because I think she’s the most glamorous actress in the current Hollywood spectrum. She’s also one of my favorite actresses. It has been a long time since I created any portrait style renders so this was a great opportunity to correct that. I spent quite a lot of time tweaking each of the details until I got it to look of every element “just right”. I’m quite happy with the way it has turned out even though it took nearly two weeks to complete.
Most of my artworks in the past several years have been rectangular (all with a 4:5 ratio) but starting this year, I’m changing that. Now, while I’ll still be rendering scenes with standard print sizes in mind, I will use a canvas size and ratio that best suits the artwork. That all starts with this artwork which is square (1:1 ratio) and will be printed as such.
I started out with a high-key light setup but kept toning it down and tweaking it until I ended up with the IDL hybrid setup that I used in the final render. The pose was probably the most time consuming part of the work though. I knew I wanted a portrait with her putting on lipstick but exactly how her head should be tilted, how her hand should hold the lipstick, and what to do with her other hand/arm was a mystery to me until I finally came up with something that just looked the way it should be. I also used the morph tool to make her lips look fuller and to slightly depress her lips where the lipstick is touching to add some interesting realism. I created a new lipstick shader just for this artwork (my old one was really just for satin-finish lips) to give her the metallic gloss style lips seen here. I also edited my nails shader and created a rather complex hair shader/texture hybrid setup that I created simply for the sake of getting the hair color “just right”. In postwork I adjusted the colors and contrast plus added a border and slight photo texture.
