Notes:
I originally created an artwork to celebrate TWLOHA Day back in 2010 but that original artwork is no longer a favorite of mine. I decided to create a brand new artwork that was also inspired by TWLOHA but with a completely new scene and concept. This new version is not so depressing but offers a glimmer of hope. She has reached a dead end but remembering that she is still loved is inspiring her to continue forward. The old artwork was far more depressing and hopeless. I much prefer this new version with its improved concept.
November 13 is TWLOHA day. Write love on your arm and when someone asks about it, tell them about TWLOHA; raise awareness of mental illness and suicide. As someone with experience in both, this day its cause is very near and dear to me. To find out more about TWLOHA, click here.
Technical Notes:
Although the base concept of a “depressed but hopeful artwork” came to me easily enough, exactly how to go about creating it was a challenge. The base scene and its main elements were always in my mind but the lighting and atmosphere was an unknown to me until right when I realized it was the way it should be. I had thought of creating a scene where it was raining or a nighttime scene but neither of those worked out in practice. I created my own soft IDL setup with special spot lights setup to illuminate the writing on the back wall and project the shadow of the noose onto that same back wall. I added water puddles to the ground but kept the stormy skydome so that it looks as if the storm has passed. In postwork, I added the “Love” writing and used a variety of filters, overlays, and PS actions to create the final artwork.
