It’s at sunset when the lady pirate grabs a bottle of rum to celebrate finding the long lost treasure chest on a Caribbean beach.
This artwork was originally called “She’s a Pirate” which was inspired by the title of the main theme from Pirates of the Caribbean which is “He’s a Pirate”. The idea was to create a lady pirate on a tropical beach drinking rum after having found a treasure chest. It took a few tries until I completely recreated the artwork from scratch and re-titled it “A Pirate’s Life” which is another title inspired by the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
The main problem here is that I used the shortcut of a 2D background and now the whole scene looks flat. Only the lady pirate and the treasure chest are 3D models and it shows. Some of the textures on her outfit, like the boots, are too plain. What the heck is in that bottle she’s carrying because it doesn’t look like rum from here!
Redux Artwork 1
For this first redux, I reused the character and treasure chest from the original scene file. I updated many of the textures and changed the lighting. Unfortunately, the change in lighting makes it look like she has a double-chin. The background was made with 3D models and the sand in front of her and the chest makes it finally look like she’s part of the scene but still looks “faked” to me.
The Fixed Final
For this final redux version, I threw out everything I had used before and started anew. I used a V6 character and outfit this time instead of the old V4 stuff. I added more detail to the background to make it a full scene rather than just a character against a background but kept the same photo-manipulated sunset over the water. Since this is a completely new scene and so much is different, I decided to give it a new and improved name to go with it; “A Pirate’s Life”.
