Notes:
I came up with the concept for this artwork back in early 2009 during a deep depression and severe bout of physical illness. I created the first “Frozen” artwork back then using this concept but I always knew I could do better. I tried to do better several times over the years since but few of those redux attempts were ever worthwhile. Finally, I decided to give the concept one more try and what you see here is my result. I wasn’t going to go with an overall blue tone but created one by accident and liked it too much to change it back to more natural looking colors. Plus, I figure a frozen corpse isn’t going to have a very “natural” color anyway. This has always been one of my favorite yet most morbid artwork concepts. I’m glad I was finally able to do it some justice.
Technical Notes:
I carefully posed the figure over a blank background then created a custom light setup with pale dark blue tinted lights and a strong bottom rim light plus a soft blue IDL dome. I thought about using depth of field but I couldn’t get it looking right. In postwork, I added the frost, snow, and ice effects using brushes from Rons and some overlays of gradients and textures. I finished the postwork with a few Photoshop actions to enhance and alter both the coloration and contrast.
