Cleopatra does not cry, she remains regal upon her throne yet she is filled with regret; not about her death, but her life. She will not be triumphed over.

Notes:
This is a revival of another of my 2011 artworks. It is also one of my most popular artworks that I sell prints of. The bending of the cobra’s body in the old version always bothered me along with a few other little things here and there so I decided to fix all that I could to breathe some new life into it. Notice that she’s no Elizabeth Taylor. The real Cleopatra was no beauty, physically, according to what very few actual historical representations we have of her. It was her mind and personality that was what truly made her so attractive. Gotta love that! I chose to have the cobra bit her chest, by her heart, rather than on her hand which would have been more likely (if it actually happened at all). The Romans had control of Alexandria and had destroyed her beloved library. Egypt, her home, had been conquered and the last of her allies were all dead. That is more than enough to cause her heart to break so that is why I had the cobra bite her there.
Technical Notes:
I used an old global illumination set for the first version of this artwork but that setup stopped working for unknown reasons when I reopened this scene for this revival. I had to create a brand new IDL based setup that looks far better so it ended up being a good thing that the old setup failed. I also updated most of the shaders, especially the body shaders of Cleopatra and the cobra with SSS. (Ha, SSS on a snake! Sorry.) I reposed the cobra to look more natural then fixed several morph and placement issues with Cleopatra’s hands and clothes. I remodeled her face as well to look slightly more like the historical representations that I managed to find. Then into postwork it went where I created the depth of field effect and enhanced the color, contrast, and a few other miscellaneous things. Oh, I also painted the snake bite on her chest in postwork.
