Notes:
I had only intended to create one Doctor Who fan artwork as part of my Xmas 2012 Gift Project but that sonic screwdriver is so cool and we spent so much time getting his face looking right that I just had to do one more to show off these details. So, here it is! Also, I figure my friend (whom I created this for) has a birthday coming up too… though he’ll get this one sooner rather than later because I just can’t wait that long!
Technical Notes:
The glow of the sonic screwdriver is a mix of IDL (the green light projected onto his face and such) and postwork (the glow around the prop). I also added a point light inside the screwdriver prop that was set to specular only since IDL projectors don’t pick up specular values too well and I didn’t want him to look flat (specular lights are what adds highlights to reflective materials and skin is slightly reflective). I also added a rim light and an IDL sphere and that’s it for lighting. A simple yet highly effective setup. Also I must once again give special thanks to Jack Tomalin who opened the sonic screwdriver prop for me (it was a free Lightwave prop that I found but I couldn’t use it as-is because I don’t have Lightwave) so I could use it in this artwork and others.
