Notes:
I started on this artwork about ten days ago but got stuck shortly thereafter with a half-finished scene. I just couldn’t figure out how to finish the scene and it looked too empty, too incomplete to even do more than a test render of. Last night, I decided to take another look at the scene and that’s when inspiration struck me and I finally came up with how to finish the scene and complete my artwork. It took a few more hours of tweaking the scene to get every element to look “just right” but I managed to achieve the look I wanted and the production render didn’t take nearly as long as most of my renders do. Postwork took a while due to the amount needed to achieve my vision but it was all worth it in the end.
Technical Notes:
I rendered this scene in Superfly with several special shaders; so many that I lost track. I used a bright emissive shader on a ball primitive to project the light on the walls where I would later put the “explosion” which was added in postwork using a resource called Rons Explosions. I also used a red colored area light to in the front of the scene to be my “red emergency light” inside the ship and a bright white spot light to work at the central star/sun in the planetary system that the ship is in. I didn’t use depth of field because it didn’t look right in my test renders. I also didn’t use refraction on the astronaut’s glass helmet because it caused his head to enlarge and look hilarious which wasn’t the point of the piece. I did a lot of postwork to not only add the explosion but also sparks, fire, smoke, and more. Finally, I used a Photoshop action to finish the artwork.
